Kanban

In the Kanban training, participants learn to manage the flow of work, not just put it on a board. Through a simulation, they experience what too much work in progress does to speed and predictability. The one-day course is complete in itself: participants learn the foundations and apply them right away to their own workflow. A second day adds the advanced practices, from Service Level Expectations to forecasting with flow data.

What you’ll learn

MODULE 1 · DAY 1

Experience flow

In a simulation, participants feel how work flows and where it gets stuck. Then we look at why.

  • What does too much work in progress do to speed and predictability?
  • Why does finishing work beat starting new work?
  • What is Kanban, and what is it not?
  • Which flow metrics matter: WIP, cycle time, throughput and work item age?

MODULE 2 · DAY 1

Kanban for your own work

  • How do I make our own workflow visible?
  • Why do WIP limits matter, and which ones fit us?
  • How do we keep work moving, day by day?
  • How do we start tomorrow?

MODULE 3 · DAY 2

Managing flow

  • How do I make process policies explicit?
  • How do I use work item age to spot work that gets stuck?
  • What is a Service Level Expectation, and how do I set one?
  • How do I handle urgent work without breaking the flow?

MODULE 4 · DAY 2

Forecasting and improving

  • How do I forecast with flow data instead of estimates?
  • Which feedback loops does a Kanban system need?
  • How do I find and remove bottlenecks?
  • How do I combine Kanban with Scrum?
